MCRAE, Mary G.

Mary (nee O'Neill) passed away peacefully with her beloved husband John, of 57 years, by her side.  She passed on Sunday, April 19, 2020, at the age of 81, while at Lakeridge Health in Oshawa.

Loved and devoted mother of Marg, Dave and Rick (Jane) and the proud and loving Grandma of Josh, Lindsey, Jake and Jairus.  Daughter of the late John and Marie O'Neill, and the dear sister of Al O'Neill (Shirley), Kathy Hermer (George; dec.) and Jim O'Neill (Patrick Conlon; dec.).  Predeceased by her brother Paul and wife Lillian O'Neill.  Beloved sister-in-law of Duncan (Jean; dec.), Cathy Allen (Bill; dec.), Theresa Millett (Max) and Angus (dec.).  Aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Mary had a positive impact on the lives of many - from her childhood in Lindsay to nurses training at St. Joseph's Hospital in Peterborough, from her work at the Oshawa Clinic to pool parties on Keewatin, from Buckhorn Lake to the ski hills and campgrounds of retirement, family and friends were always around and always welcome.

However, life was not always easy, Mom beat cancer and battled Parkinson's, occasionally showing it "who was boss" - getting up from her chair and shuffling off, returning a few moments later with a muffin or cookie, a glance at the idle walker as she sat.

Ultimately Parkinson's played a part, forcing her to be a spectator, taking her freedom, but not her will.  She will be remembered for her devotion to family, for her optimism and for her perseverance.

Arrangements entrusted to McINTOSH-ANDERSON-KELLAM FUNERAL HOME LTD., 152 King St. E., Oshawa, ON (905-433-5558).  A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date.  Donations in memory of Mary to Parkinson Canada would be appreciated.  In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic we encourage relatives and friends to express their sympathies and condolences online at makfuneralhome.com.

My sincere condolences to John, Marg, Dave and Rick in the loss of Mary. She had indomitable spirit fighting the diseases she suffered. I admired her energy, still skiing while she had Parkinson’s. I saw a lot of Dave and Rick while they were growing up on Keewatin and I know my son Tim still keeps in touch with them. They were a terrible trio while they were growing up so I heard from Mary a lot at that time. Also John and she used to walk past the house daily before they moved.

John and family - - Jane and I were so sorry to see that Mary has died. She was a wonderful person who we both enjoyed anytime we saw her. She was always positive and happy and left us in good spirits. She's been through some rough things and you've been there right along side supporting her through it all. She gave an excellent allergy needle at the clinic and usually the jab was over before I realized it had happened as we were both involved is some amazing discussion. We send our deepest sympathy and heart feelings to you and your family. May God send you peace and strength as you all deal with Mary's loss. I'm sure the angels have safely lifted her to heaven and that she'll be singing in the heavenly choir and looking down on us all. Blessings, Jane and Ashton

Dear Uncle John, Margie, Dave, Rick and families: we are devastated to lose such a wonderful Aunt. We have such great memories of family get-togethers, at the pool or at the trailer, corn roasts, or visits. We even made Aunt Mary a softball fan, and she came out and cheered on the girls at their tournaments - she brought good luck with her! And her heart was so big, jumping in to care by phone or in person. Our love and condolences to all.
